Girls Night In

Tonight I’m having some girlfriend’s over, courtesy of Universal Home Entertainment, to watch Bridesmaids on DVD. Seeing as how I love to entertain, I loved the movie when I saw it in the theatre, and we just got a new fancy television, it seemed like a perfect match up. Universal Home Entertainment is providing some nibbles and the DVD, the rest is just me pretending to be the Hostess with the Mostest. I made goodie bags, because, well, goodie bags are fun.

I filled them with a few little things, falling generally into the categories of “fall” and “girly”:

From left to right we have pint sized pumpkin scented Yankee candles, Altoids mints in the purse sized container and a travel package of Say Yes to Cucumbers face wash towels. A little bit of everything!

The menu is as follows:

A few of the guests are bringing other things to nibble so I’m certain we will have more than enough food- I always tend to make too much, but I’d hate to send a guest home hungry. Now about that punch…..once I trimmed it down to account for a smaller gathering, I’ll need:
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1 box of strawberries, sliced
  • 1/2 cup of brandy
  • 1/2 cup of tequila
  • 1/2 cup of triple sec
  • 1 bottle of sweet white wine
  • 1 bottle of club soda
  • 1 bottle of champagne or bubbly wine
  • 1 lime, cut into circles
In a large bowl, mix sugar and fruit, stirring to evenly coat. Add liquors and let sit for 1 hour. Strain through a mesh sieve into a punch bowl, and add wine, club soda, and champagne, cold, when ready to serve. Garnish with lime circles.
I have my punch bowl ready to go.
As for cucumber & dill tea sandwiches, these things are divine- and don’t let their diminutive size fool you. I’ve watched my husband and friends eat an entire tray with gusto. My recipe, from the ladies at the Gavel and Spoon, is as follows:
  • 2 loaves pumpernickel cocktail bread
  • 1 lb of cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 package of dry ranch dressing mix
  • 1 large bunch of fresh dill
  • 1-2 cucumbers, sliced into rounds
Mix dry ranch mix with softened cream cheese & stir thoroughly. Take one loaf of bread and lay out on baking sheet. Spread cream cheese on each slice, using half of the cream cheese total. Sprinkle dill on each slice and top with 1-2 cucumber slices. Spread remaining cream cheese on slices of the second loaf and top the sandwiches. Slice diagonally and serve.

My refreshments are all lined up (I also stocked the fridge – on my own dime- with some beer and regular white and red wine for our less adventurous guests).
I also have an assortment of cookies & popcorn to serve during the movie. Here is to girls night in -next week I’ll let you know how it all turned out!
I have partnered with Universal Home Entertainment to review Bridesmaids the movie, in my home with friends. I have not been compensated for my time, only the movie and food. My opinions have been and always will be entirely my own and I am not paid to publish positive comments.
