Two Adults, One Dog

I’m coming off the high of one of those weekends where everything manages to fall into place- we made it to the gym, ate yummy (healthy!) meals at home, got the dog to the big dog park where he chased his tail to his heart’s content, got up early, took a luxurious hour long nap and watched both Mad Men & copious amounts of the Olympics.

Ahhhhhh.

Back in college the perfect weekend was composed of lots of alcoholic beverages, yelling over the music, staying out until the sun came up (please tell me I wasn’t the only one who put sunglasses in my bag the night before to help me out on the walk home…) and lots of po’boys to soak it all up.

Hmm. Amazing how much has changed.

Now we have jobs & paychecks and we recently added another “adult” bill into the monthly mix- paying for our own auto insurance- where I made the grown up decision that $1 a month was totally worth it for roadside assistance, no? We also experienced another “grown up” situation this weekend when B dropped his beloved iPhone in our parking garage, screen down, and picked it up to discover- yee gads- that the screen had shattered into a million pieces. Oy vey. After hemming & hawing and calling Apple to discover a new screen was a measly $199, and a new phone was $199 + two year contract re-activation we began researching illicit ways to fix one’s shattered iPhone screen. Luckily, before we attempted this four hour operation with black market suction cups, screen and digitizer PAG came through with an old iPhone lurking in her closet- one SIM card swap later & we congratulated ourselves on not paying the Apple Gods another $200, because seriously man, car insurance is expensive. My recent succesful annual review + raise sadly does not cover both car insurance & the dropping of iPhones. Who knew?

The dog has completely taken over our hearts, even if he still isn’t allowed on the bed much to his chagrin. We’ve noticed that our neighborhood has a disgusting and mystifying problem of food trash everywhere, namely chicken bones. Fried chicken, buffalo chicken wings, the Bone Throwers are not picky as to their poultry. They also cannot find a trash can to save their lives and so now I wear gloves when I walk the dog regardless of the temperature because I often have to stop and pry a chicken wing out of his grubby little mouth. He likes to howl like I’m beating him as I take the bone away, leading the other dog walkers in the area to look at me with contempt – I’m half inclined to run up to them, shaking the gnawed chicken bone in their face, defending my dog-loving honor, but then I realize that would put me on par with the neighborhood crack head who once ran naked through the produce department at the grocery down the street. (Side Note: what an epic commercial for my neighborhood, no? Big city living, wooot!) The only thing worse than the chicken bones was the chocolate cupcake RB tried to wolf down with me noticing -and seriously, who throws chocolate cake away?! Not I. So other than digging food stuffs out of RB’s mouth on a regular basis he has become quite the canine companion. He loves his kibble so very much (Wellness Lamb & Salmon formula for those curious) and he loves his freeze dried duck treats even more that he is often found with his snout under the utility closet door, where all his goodies are stored, snuffling and sniffing and taking in the eu de kibble & vacuum cleaner. Rhett 1Ahh, canines!

He also pouts when he isn’t allowed to combine his favorite sport – meticulously chewing a Greenie into 52 individual Greenie-nubs, deposited in a line for easy clean-up with his favorite spot in the world, our couch.

He’s so cute in his corner of the couch. My great dane is a total couch hog. Nothing like sitting on the floor while the pooch sprawls across the sofa…

Aw, Rhett looks like he’s all snuggled in, and very comfy! What a sweetie he is turning out to be, despite the on-the-bed tendencies. You two are such good parents, especially when considering how daunting urban canine ownership can be.

Smiles and hugs at you, Silly Tilly sends special pooch kisses at Rhett.
